What motivated European exploration and, and why was it so successful?

European exploration was for the purpose of finding a water route to India. As the Spanish and Portuguese began this quest, they ended up in what is now North and South America. When they returned with stories of gold and silver for the taking they concentrated on that - gold and silver, and how much could be brought back to fill their country's coffers.
