Being an accountant?

I'm looking for a new job, and an accountant position opened up where my wife works. What qualifications does one need to become an accountant? I have a B.S. in Math/Statistics and have worked as a statistical yst for a marketing company for a year. I can obviously do all levels of math, and enjoy working with finances. Do you think I am qualified compared to someone who has an accounting degree? Thanks!
