What statement concerning gluconeogenesis and glycolysis is correct?
D is the correct answer. The glycolytic pathway has 10 steps , 7 of which are reversible and depend only on the concentrations of products and reactants. The other 3 steps though irreversible via the glycolytic enzymes for those steps, have enzymes that are specifically involved in gluconeogenesis so that they can go around the irreversibility of the other glycolytic enzymes.....for instance, the rate limiting enzyme of glycolysis is phosphofructokinase it irreversibly takes fructose -6-P to fructose 1,6 bis P ...BUT when its activity is shut down by phosphorylation of its activating companion enzyme PFK-2. ( via fructose 2,6 bisP ).then the enzyme fructose 1,6 bisphosphatase is ACTIVATED to allow gluconeogenesis to proceed. This is an example of reciprocal control..so that when one pathway is shut down another is simultaneously activated by the same group of compounds/biomolecules
